It was dark when Nell Ayrton got to Carlisle.

There had been a raid in the Midlands and the station was blacked-out and in chaos.

Nell ran wildly from one side of the enormous station to the other, despair clutching at her heart.

How on earth was she to find an unknown woman in the milling crowds? And would she have Roger’s baby safely tucked away with her?

Nell is just one of the Aryton’s in trouble as the Second World War looms.

Amberwell, an estate on the west coast of Scotland, has been in the Ayrton family for several generations... descending from father to son in an unbroken line.

By family tradition, each new owner was to add to the amenities of the place and in this way Amberwell grew larger and more beautiful as the years went by, endowed with gardens and terraces and orchards.

The five young Ayrtons who grew up at Amberwell have now ventured out into the world.

They may have been brought up by cool, distant parents, but the bonds between these children are strong.

Now they must fight to hold on to what they see dear as the threat of war emerges.

Will the war drastically alter their destinies?

What will become of the Amberwell children, their complex relationships, and the place they call home ...?

Amberwell Ayrton Family Book 1 eBook D E Stevenson Reviews

This was a good look into the lives of the British upper middle class, through the twenties, thirties and forties. Published in 1957, it is of its time, with a certain class in mind. Several racists comments are very jarring but in the fifties that would probably be considered normal-(
It tells the story of a family and it's amusing to see how little the parents care for their children. Nannie does everything, she is their mother in every sense of the word and the two strangers living on the floor below are Mother and Father. So if you are into Evelyn Waugh or Dorothy Whipple, this is in their catagory, if not in their league, and for $3.99 it was a good read.
I enjoy books that are set in historic settings. This is set in England before and during WWII mostly around one family's children. Their strict and never present parents make for an odd upbringing then as adults the war changes everything as it did in many countries. It is a cliffhanger and I look forward to book two which I will definitely read.
I believe that if their were a Wikipedia entry for 'comfort reads,' D E Stevenson's name would be at the top. There is enough distance between our world and the war-torn world of mid-19th century England, that the stories should start 'once upon a time.'

Amberwell is a house, not quite a home, and almost a character in itself. A beautiful house, owned by a wealthy man and his frugal wife, who manages to run the place with the help of only eight servants. There are some assorted children, but the parents needn't bother about them. That is the job of the nurse and the nannie. The children have learned well to stay far from the notice of of the parents and are generally successful. It becomes more difficult as they age, especially for the three girls. The boys are sent off to good boarding schools, of course, but the girls are educated at home.

Connie, the oldest girl, takes after her mother and is much concerned with clothes and boys. She speaks right up and carries her weight in a conversation or social situation. The two younger girls are very shy and terrified of their mother and being forced into the spotlight. Unfortunately they have no obvious beauty of compensate for their lack of social skills and are usually not included. They live in a world that consists of themselves and the nanny. When they are separated, it is a devastating rupture that threatens to become permanent.

Connie marries well, of course, but the brothers are ripped away by the storm of war, and Nell is left alone to run the house with the help of an aging staff, down to a gardener, a cook, and elderly nanny. Since the house and grounds are quite large, this is barely adequate. The father is dead by this time, and the elderly mother barely notices so long as she has what she needs for her own comfort.

So where is the comfort in this? It is in the writing, of course, but also in the characters who love their home and each other very much in spite of the obstacles life puts in their place. They're rather like the people who eat Powdermilk Biscuits. They have the strength to get up and do what needs to be done. When the staff leave to do their part in the war effort, Nell learns how to cook, how to make up a bed, how to tell the difference between a flower and a weed. She does it without whining because it must be done, and there is no one else. It mostly comes right in the end.

As with all Stevenson's books, I am sorry when it ends, because it doesn't really end, it just stops. This is not a romance with a guaranteed HEA, or a mystery where all the ends are tied up neatly. These are real people, whose lives continue past the last page, and the reader is sorry to leave their company when it is time to go.
These books are so well written and entertaining that I wish the author had written a lot more of them. No living author entertains me so well, despite all the sex and violence they feel compelled to include in their creations. I get really sick of cookie cutter books cranked out for money with highly improbable plots, shallow characters and gratuitous gore. I highly recommend D.E. Stevenson if you are ready for a change.
I was looking for a kind and gentle read, and I didn't have much time. Bought this book because it was cheap, and set in Scotland. As I began to read it I thought perhaps I had bought a different sort of book by accident; perhaps a travel book. And then the Ayrton family story grabbed me! I was so engrossed that I was surprised, and saddened, when it ended. I have reviewed more than a few books, and I rarely rave. This is a beautifully written and thoroughly complete book. I don't know anything about the author or anything else written by this author, but I'm going to go searching for more. This little book is a real jewel.
I tend towards murder and mayhem, so this starter a little slow for me; however as I got more involved with the characters and story line, it got progressively better. I even grieved for the "closed off" lives of the little girls.
Here’s another look at how families rooted in the previous century’s traditions face up to changes in society, struggling with the realities of a world war. I read where this was compared to the television series Downton Abbey, but Amberwell stands on it own two feet. The characters, both likable and otherwise, are rich and colorful and it takes just a few pages in to hook most readers. The most likable character is Nell, who seems at first to be a minor character, but this reader at least, saw her as a rock in a family populated with dreamers, scoundrels and adventurers. Not much into series which obligate me to continue with a set of characters, I find this one to be an exception.
